The Root Chakra, Menopause & Coming Back to the Body

There are times in menopause when the body does not need more pushing.

It needs grounding.

It needs safety.

It needs a moment to come back to itself.

So many women arrive in midlife having carried far more than anyone ever saw.

Work.

Family.

Grief.

Stress.

Caregiving.

Body changes.

Hormonal changes.

Old emotional patterns.

Years of being the strong one.

Years of holding everything together.

Years of overriding the body because there was no time to stop.

Then menopause comes along & suddenly the body starts speaking louder.

Sleep can change.

Anxiety can rise.

The body can feel less steady.

Confidence can dip.

The gut can become unsettled.

The breath can feel shallow.

Old stress patterns can become harder to ignore.

This is why I often say menopause is not just a hormonal transition.

For many women, it can also be a nervous system threshold.

What is the root chakra?

In the chakra system, the root chakra is the first energy centre.

It sits at the base of the spine & is connected to safety, grounding, survival, home, money, belonging, family patterns & our relationship with the body.

In simple language, the root chakra asks:

Do I feel safe?

Do I feel supported?

Do I feel steady?

Do I feel like I belong?

Can I rest without guilt?

Can I trust the ground beneath me?

Can I be in my body without bracing?

For many women in midlife, these questions become very real.

Especially if life has involved long term stress, trauma, grief, burnout, emotional labour, caring for others or years of being the one who keeps everything going.

This is where the spiritual & the scientific begin to meet.

Because when we speak about the root chakra, we are speaking about safety.

And when we speak about the nervous system, we are also speaking about safety.

The nervous system is always listening

The nervous system is constantly reading the body & the environment.

It listens to the breath.

The gut.

The heart.

The muscles.

The face.

The jaw.

The tone of a room.

The energy of a person.

The emotional atmosphere around us.

It is always asking:

Am I safe?

Do I need to protect?

Can I soften?

Do I need to stay alert?

When a woman has lived under long term stress, the body can become used to being on guard.

The jaw may tighten.

The shoulders may brace.

The pelvis may hold tension.

The gut may react.

The breath may become shallow.

Sleep may become lighter.

The mind may keep scanning for what could go wrong.

Rest may feel difficult, even when she is exhausted.

This is not weakness.

This is the body protecting.

And during menopause, when hormones are changing & life is often asking a woman to review everything, these old patterns can become much harder to ignore.

This is why root chakra work can be so supportive.

Not because it is a magic fix.

But because it gives us a language for grounding, safety & coming back into the body.

Why grounding matters in menopause

Grounding is not just a spiritual word.

Grounding is practical.

It is feeling your feet on the floor.

It is noticing your breath.

It is placing a hand on your body & remembering you are here.

It is being able to pause before reacting.

It is coming out of the busy mind & back into the body.

It is asking yourself what you actually need.

It is letting the nervous system know:

I am here.

I can take one breath.

I do not have to carry everything in this moment.

For women in menopause, grounding can be especially important when emotions feel heightened, sleep is disrupted, anxiety rises or the body feels unfamiliar.

Sometimes the most powerful healing work begins with something very simple.

Feet on the floor.

A longer exhale.

A grounding essential oil.

A hand on the lower belly.

A moment of stillness.

A journal prompt that brings the truth gently to the surface.

Essential oils & the emotional body

Essential oils are part of my work because scent speaks to the emotional brain very quickly.

One aroma can bring back a memory.

One scent can soften the breath.

One small ritual can help a woman pause, reconnect & feel more present in her body.

For root chakra work, I often think of oils that feel earthy, steady & grounding.

Vetiver.

Cedarwood.

Frankincense.

Myrrh.

Patchouli.

Ginger.

Black Spruce.

These oils have depth.

They do not rush the body.

They invite us downwards.

Out of the racing mind.

Back into the breath.

Back into the feet.

Back into the body.

Back into the present moment.

This is why I love bringing aromatherapy into menopause support.

Not as a replacement for medical care.

Not as a cure.

But as a sensory ritual that supports awareness, reflection & nervous system calm.

Why I created the Root Chakra Ritual PDF

I created the Root Chakra Ritual PDF for women in midlife who feel tired, scattered, emotionally overwhelmed or disconnected from their body.

Women who know they need something gentle.

Women who want to understand their body through both science & soul.

Women who are beginning to realise that menopause is not only about managing symptoms.

It is also about listening more deeply to what the body has carried.

Inside the guide, I bring together:

𖤓 root chakra wisdom
𖤓 vagus nerve awareness
𖤓 nervous system support
𖤓 essential oils
𖤓 breathwork
𖤓 reflection prompts
𖤓 simple grounding rituals

It is a gentle guide to help you pause, breathe & come back to yourself.

It is not about forcing yourself to be calm.

It is about giving the body small signals of safety.

A slower breath.

Feet on the floor.

A grounding oil.

A moment of stillness.

A question that helps you return to the truth of what you need.

A simple root chakra reflection

You may want to pause with these questions:

Where in my life do I feel unsupported?

What am I still carrying that feels too heavy?

Where does my body feel tense or guarded?

What helps me feel safe?

What would grounding look like for me today?

What do I need to stop pushing through?

These are not small questions.

They are root questions.

And sometimes, they are the beginning of healing.

Coming back to the root

Menopause can strip away the old ways of coping.

The overgiving.

The pleasing.

The silence.

The pushing.

The carrying.

The pretending everything is fine.

And sometimes that can feel frightening.

But it can also become an invitation.

To come back to the body.

To listen differently.

To stop treating exhaustion as failure.

To stop seeing sensitivity as weakness.

To begin asking what safety, support & grounding mean now.

Not twenty years ago.

Now.

This is the heart of root chakra work in menopause.

It is not about escaping the body.

It is about returning to it.

With more compassion.

More awareness.

More honesty.

More support.

My Root Chakra Ritual PDF is now available in my website shop for £7.

It was created as a gentle resource for women who want to explore menopause, grounding, essential oils, the vagus nerve, nervous system support & emotional healing in a simple, beautiful way.
